MapleStory Classic World spawn rate and map capacity

4 min read
Why does this map feel empty?
iWhat Spawn rate and map capacity is
A map keeps a set number of monsters alive at once, its capacity, and almost every map has more spawn points than that. So a map is busy because of what it holds, not how many points it has or how fast they refill: nearly every point sits on the same short timer. What it holds comes from the size of the map, and that is a column.

The short answer

A spawn point is a place a monster can appear, not a monster. The map keeps its capacity alive, shared out between every kind on it, and the capacity comes from the size of its floors. Line 2 <Area 2> has 107 spawn points and holds 17. Respawn is effectively a constant, so “which map holds the most” is the question with an answer. The spawning formulas work it through.

What a map holds is the client’s own sum over its floors: about one monster for every 128,000 square pixels of floor box, times its mobRate, never fewer than 1 and never more than 40. Every count here is the Public Release’s, read out of its map files; the maps kept from Closed Online Test 2 are left out. This is what the EXP rate on the training tables is built from, and the capacity formula has every map with its working.

The most spawn points for every monster the map holds. A list ranked by points puts these near the top; what you meet on them is the Holds column. The points still matter: they decide which monsters fill the capacity, so a monster with half the points on a map is about half of what is there.

These are the upstream export’s figures. Its 7.56 s is what it gives a point with no cooldown of its own, and such a point comes back on the map’s refill, about 7 s by one timing test (how a map refills). The training tables treat anything above a minute as not a population: a ten-minute respawn is a monster you might meet, not one you can farm, so its EXP is left out of a map’s rate and its row stays on the map. See the training guide for what that does to the ranking.

The rate multiplier

Every map carries a mobRate, from 0.4 to 1.9 in the release’s map files, 1 where a map sets none. It multiplies straight into the capacity: a ×1.3 map holds about thirty per cent more than its size alone gives, and a ×0.5 map half, until the cap of 40. The Holds column above already counts it, so nothing on this page or the training tables multiplies by it again.
